For Mother Earth

The other day I was taking our our garbage and I thought to myself, “Wow, our garbage has been significantly reduced now that we compost.”

We use Waste Not Compost LLC to compost for our family. It’s something our family gets immense value out of knowing we are keeping compostable waste out of our landfills. Micah adores putting scraps in the compost bucket and watching the truck pick it up weekly.

It’s easy, convenient, and great for the environment.

Win-win-win.

I am someone who constantly looks for ways to improve. (Hello enneagram 1 - the perfectionist).

We compost and our waste has shrunk significantly. I want to see more ways we can shrink our environmental footprint.

Here are some ideas that have worked beautifully for our family:

Buy “loose” produce.

(Foods that aren’t wrapped in plastic. Ex: Loose lemons, apples, brussel sprouts, carrots, broccoli. These will be found in the fresh food part of the grocery store)

Use paper garbage bags

I came up with this fun idea and told my husband. “What if we use paper bags for our garbage instead of plastic.” We experimented with it and have greatly enjoyed it.

We pick up a few paper bags from the local grocery store, put all of our non-compostable items in it, and dispose as we normally do. We have become more conscious of what we throw away (Ex: wet items will soak the bag so what can we do to dispose of that more consciously.)

Use shampoo, conditioner, and body bars

Growing up it was normal for the shower to be littered with plastic bottles. Everyone had their own products and it was a single use plastic nightmare. We have made the switch to shampoo, conditioner, and body bars to normalize hygiene products that are earth friendly. Our kids will grow up and see this as a normal part of life.

The Earthling Co is my favorite shampoo and conditioner bar hair care company.

Use UNPaper towels.

We enjoy reusable and washable paper towels. They are absorbent, come in fun designs, and are reusable. Marley’s Monsters is our favorite brand if you are looking to try them.

Buy used

We buy used, not because we can’t afford new, although the savings is astonishing, but because we prefer used items.

Our clothes, kids and adults, are consigned from a local store. We search online market places for items we want which gives us more time to ponder the purchase.

Use what you have

You can’t buy your way to being more earth conscious. The most earth friendly products are those left on the shelves. Save your money and use the items you already have before purchasing anything. Once you have used everything you have, see if there is a green alternative. This will save you money and save the earth alike!

Living clean and green doesn’t need to be difficult. It’s fun and easy to find ways to live in less.

We would love to hear how you live Earth conscious.
