Hiking With MS

When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2017 I knew my life wouldn’t be the same.

Hiking is always something I have enjoyed and since my diagnosis I have hiked MORE.

Movement and mobility with MS isn’t always promised. So each day that I am able to physically move my body is a blessing and I treat it as such. Here are some lessons I have learned in my experience with hiking and MS: Each day is different. Check in with yourself and see how you are doing and feeling. If it’s not a good day, grant yourself some grace and try again another time. If it’s a good day, take the hike at your pace - One step at a time and one breath at a time. Stay hydrated and take breaks whenever needed. Go with a family member or friend. Having support is always appreciated. Release expectations. If your body tells you to turn around, it’s time to listen to it. Be happy with how far you have come and enjoy the view where you are at. Practice gratitude. Being able to move and breathe is a blessing. Honor your strength and how much you have achieved thus far. Research the trail. Take a look at the level of difficulty and elevation of the trail. There can be different variations depending on location. Ex: Part of our hike in the Badlands National Park was handicap accessible. Enjoy the view from your vantage point. Snacks are always a good idea. Keep your energy up and enjoy a snack you feel good eating. Packing lightly will also help you move comfortably. Dress appropriately and check the forecast. High temperatures and humidity can greatly impact my MS symptoms. Reschedule the hike if needed to keep yourself safe and healthy. As I compose each of these tips, I am reminded how universal they are. If you have MS, another autoimmune disorder, special ability, or not, these lessons can help you get outside while exploring the beautiful world that surrounds us. My diagnosis doesn't define me, it inspires me to appreciate the life I have been given and embrace it in all of its imperfections. Now let's get outside! Happy adventuring. TANCKS so much for reading.
